# Resettle: restore Mac window positions after monitor changes

**Resettle is a $14.99 one-off macOS menu bar utility that remembers where your
windows belong on each display setup, and puts them back when that setup comes
round again.**

Runs on macOS 14 Sonoma through macOS 27, on Apple silicon and Intel. A 5.9 MB download. Native Swift, not
Electron. No subscription and no account.

## The problem it solves

macOS remembers your windows, until it doesn't. Every display change is a small
demolition:

1. **You unplug at home.** macOS folds every window onto the laptop screen,
   stacked and resized.
2. **You plug in at the office.** The windows spread out again, just not where
   you would have put them.
3. **You get home.** Nothing is where you left it. So you drag it all back, one
   window at a time.
4. **Tomorrow, again.**

The work is never hard. It is just endless.

## How it works

Resettle learns **desks**. A desk is a display setup you keep coming back to:
two monitors at the office, one monitor and the laptop at home, the MacBook on
its own.

- **No profiles to build.** Resettle notices a display setup you keep coming
back to and starts remembering it. There is nothing to configure first.
- **Every desk keeps its own memory.** Two displays at home, two at the office,
or none at all. Each setup gets its own remembered arrangement.
- **As many monitors as you have.** Two, three, or the laptop on its own.
Identical monitors are told apart by serial where they report one, and by
position where they don't, so the left one's windows return to the left one.
- **Different sizes still work.** Resettle keeps the geometry that makes sense
for the display a window lands on, instead of replaying coordinates that no
  longer mean anything.
- **Move something and it takes the hint.** Drag a window somewhere better and
carry on working there. That becomes where it belongs. No rule to edit,
  nothing to confirm.
- **It waits for displays to settle.** A dock can make displays appear and
vanish several times while it negotiates. Sleep and wake do it too. Resettle
lets the configuration stop changing, then restores once, instead of chasing
  every flicker.
- **Full-screen windows are remembered too.** A full-screen window lives in its
own Space bound to one display, so it cannot simply be moved. Resettle takes
it out, puts it on the display it belongs to, and puts it back into full
screen. An editor that was full-screen on the big monitor is full-screen
on the big monitor again, not on the laptop.
- **It can open what is missing.** If a desk remembers apps that are not
running, Resettle can open them as the desk comes back, so arriving at the
office assembles the whole thing. Off by default, capped, and it never
reopens something you just quit. Set it per app if you want it for some and
  not others.

### The same monitor in two places

Plenty of people have the same display model at home and at work. Resettle uses
everything it can to tell two desks apart. When it genuinely cannot, it asks
once from the menu bar (*This Setup Is… → Home / Work / New Desk…*), remembers
the answer, and never asks again.

## The interface

A menu bar icon. There is no main window to keep open and no dashboard to check.
Resettle never appears in the Dock or the app switcher, and the menu bar icon
can be hidden too. It keeps working with nothing on screen at all. It can start
at login.

| Gesture | Does |
| --- | --- |
| Click | Resettle Now |
| Option-click | Remember This Layout |
| Right-click | Open the menu |

The menu itself: Resettle Now (⌃⌥⌘R), Remember This Layout (⌃⌥⌘L), Undo Last
Resettle, Desks, This Setup Is…, Pause Automatic Resettling, Check for
Updates…, Settings… (⌘,), Quit Resettle (⌘Q).

## What Resettle is not

- No tiling system
- No rules engine
- No workflow builder
- No subscription

It is **not** a window manager and is not trying to replace Rectangle, Magnet,
Moom, Amethyst or yabai. Those arrange windows. Resettle remembers the
arrangement you already made and brings it back. They compose well: use a tiler
to lay a desk out, and Resettle to restore it tomorrow.

## Privacy

- **Layouts stay on your Mac.** Which window belongs where is written on your
  machine, for your machine.
- **No Resettle account.** There is nothing to sign up for. Your licence key is
  the whole relationship.
- **No screenshots, no contents.** Resettle needs a window's position and size.
It has no reason to look inside it, so it doesn't.

The only thing that leaves your Mac is a licence check to
Dodo Payments. Full detail: https://getresettle.com/privacy

## Price

**$14.99, once.** Includes: use it forever, updates included, no
subscription, no recurring fees.

Dodo Payments is the Merchant of Record, so any tax for your
country is added at checkout and shown before you pay. A licence key arrives by
email. Enter it once.

If it doesn't work for you, ask within 14 days and you get a

## Requirements, stated plainly

These are the things that would make Resettle the wrong answer for someone:

- **Runs on macOS 14 Sonoma through macOS 27, on Apple silicon and Intel.** Earlier macOS is not supported. The download is
  5.9 MB.
- **macOS Accessibility permission is required.** No app can read or move
another app's windows without it. Resettle cannot work without it, and macOS
  asks for it once, itself.
- **Occasional internet access is required.** Resettle re-checks the licence
periodically while online and keeps working offline for a grace period. A Mac
kept permanently offline will eventually stop until it can validate again.
- **It does not arrange windows for you.** If what you want is tiling or
snapping, Resettle is not that and will disappoint you.

## Frequently asked questions

### What does Resettle actually do?

It remembers where each app's windows sit on each of your display setups, and puts them back when that setup comes back: after you plug in a monitor, undock, wake from sleep, or open the lid somewhere else.

That is the whole product. It does not do anything else.

### Do I need to create profiles?

No. Resettle notices the display setups you keep returning to and starts remembering them on its own. There is nothing to configure before it is useful.

You can still name a desk or map one by hand from the menu bar if you want to, but that is an option, not a setup step.

### What if I use the same monitor model at home and at work?

Resettle uses everything it can to tell two setups apart. When that genuinely isn't enough, it asks you once: pick This Setup Is… → Office from the menu bar, and it remembers the answer from then on.

### Does it work with multiple monitors and docks?

Yes. That is the case it was built for. Two monitors, three, or a laptop on its own. Resettle remembers which display each window belonged to, not just where it sat on screen.

Two monitors of the same model are handled too. Resettle identifies displays by serial number where they report one, and falls back to where each sits in your arrangement where they don't, so the left monitor's windows come back to the left monitor, not whichever one macOS happened to list first.

Docks are messy on purpose: displays can appear and disappear several times while one negotiates. Resettle waits for your displays to stop changing, then restores once.

### What about full-screen windows?

They are remembered, including which display they were full-screen on.

A full-screen window lives in its own Space tied to one display, so it cannot be moved the way an ordinary window can. When one comes back on the wrong display, Resettle takes it out of full screen, moves it to the display it belongs to, and puts it back into full screen. If a window is already full-screen on the right display, nothing happens at all.

### Can it open apps that aren't running?

Yes, if you ask it to. Switch on "Open apps a desk remembers" and Resettle will open the apps a desk knows about but that aren't running, so plugging in at the office assembles the whole setup.

It is off by default, because opening applications nobody asked for is obnoxious. It opens at most eight, it never reopens something you quit in the last few minutes, and you can set it per app: always, never, or follow the default.

### Is Resettle a window manager?

No. It does not tile, snap, or take over your keyboard shortcuts, and it is not trying to replace Rectangle or Magnet.

Arrange your windows however you like, with whatever tools you like. Resettle's job is to remember the result and bring it back.

### What does Resettle need access to?

macOS Accessibility permission, granted once when you first run it. That is what lets an app read and move window positions. There is no way to restore a layout without it.

### Which Macs does Resettle run on?

Any Mac running macOS 14 Sonoma or later. The download is a universal build, so it runs natively on both Apple silicon and Intel Macs. There is only one file and it is the right one.

### Is the price what I actually pay?

$14.99 is the price of Resettle itself. Dodo Payments is the Merchant of Record and handles tax, so depending on where you are, your country's sales tax or VAT is added at checkout and shown before you pay.

There is nothing after that: no renewal, no per-Mac charge, no upgrade fee.

### Is this a subscription?

No. $14.99 once, and updates to the version you buy are included. There is no recurring fee and no plan to upgrade to. A future major version may be a paid upgrade, and if it is, your license keeps working on the version you have.

### Does Resettle upload my window contents?

No. Resettle works with a window's position and size. It has no reason to read what is inside a window, take screenshots, or look at documents, so it doesn't.

Your layouts stay on your Mac, and there is no Resettle account to create.
