Resettle vs Stay, Display Maid, Moom and Snapback
Several Mac apps put windows back when your displays change. They differ in price, in how much setup they need, and in what they handle. Here is a straight comparison, checked in September 2026.

Stay
Free on the Mac App Store. You tell it to store your window positions, and it restores them when displays reconnect. If saving layouts yourself is fine, it is hard to argue with free.
Display Maid
$5.99. Saves window positions for each display configuration and in profiles you create, and restores them automatically. Its own FAQ says it does not open apps that are not running and does not handle full-screen windows.
Moom
$15. A full window manager — snapping, resizing, keyboard control — with saved layouts. A layout can be set to apply when your displays change. Choose it if you want a window manager first.
Snapback
Free, with a $9.99 Pro upgrade. A window manager with saved workspaces that adapts when a monitor connects or disconnects. Pro adds launchers that open apps for a workspace.
Resettle
$14.99 once. It does not arrange windows for you and has no snapping. It does one job: remember where every window goes on every display setup, and put it back.
- Nothing to set up. It learns each setup as you work. Move a window and that becomes its place.
- The same monitor in two places. Identical models at home and at work stay separate. If it cannot tell, it asks once and remembers.
- Full-screen windows go back to full screen on the right display.
- Missing apps can be reopened when a setup returns — per app, off by default.
- It never guesses. If it cannot be sure which window is which, it leaves it alone. Every restore can be undone.
Which should you pick?
- Free, and you don't mind saving layouts yourself: Stay.
- Snapping and tiling as well: Moom or Snapback. Resettle works alongside either.
- It should just remember, with nothing to set up: Resettle. If it isn't for you, ask within 14 days for a full refund.
